Private Pool, Buckinghamshire

Paul + O Architects' brief was a challenging one. Design an extension to house a thoroughly modern, contemporary interior pool which will sit in context with the current surroundings. The existing buildings were mainly constructed of red brick with high pitched roofs, not typically associated with contemporary, avant-garde design.

Known for their contemporary style of clean, straight lines and use of colour, the client was confident in the architect's ability to meet the brief. The project was completed in 2009 with beautiful results.

The design challenge

Indoor swimming pools have incredibly poor acoustics due to the large, reflective surfaces of the pool and typically stone or ceramic tile surrounds. In addition, indoor pools have very high humidity levels. These issues combined are a significant challenge to overcome when looking for an acoustic system. The StoSilent Panel Alu system was specified for its high acoustic performance and stability in high humidity levels. The practice also wanted something monolithic and beautiful to match their design aspirations.

Paul + O has specified Sto on a number of projects in the recent past as they believe Sto manufactures some of the highest quality products available. With help from the Sto technical team, all needs in terms of performance and aesthetic considerations were met fully.

The project was shortlisted for the 2010 RIBA Awards.
