Environmental Statement
Protecting the natural basis for life and improving quality of life are important aims in social policy. Sto actively pursues these aims, always acting in accordance with the company's guiding principle: "Building with conscience."
In order to define and implement its ecological targets, Sto has developed a system of environmental management conforming to international standards. This relates to the entire process chain - from the procurement of the raw product, to production, packaging and logistics.
Responsible manufacturing methods
Since 1998, Sto factory control officers have defined standards in the areas of health & safety, fire safety, as well as the reduction and prevention of water pollution, waste and hazardous substances. These measures have provided a basis for successfully implementing a number of improvements and cost-savings.
Active environmental protection for facades
Sto products make a clear contribution towards improving the quality of the environment. StoTherm external wall insulation systems and the StoVentec rainscreen cladding system are extremely energy efficient, cutting heating requirements, thereby reducing CO² emissions. These systems represent the contribution Sto is making towards active environmental protection through reducing air pollution and improving the global climate.
VOC free products
Studies show that solvents and plasticiers play a central role in interior air pollution. These chemical substances, known as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), are contained in interior coatings to improve film formation, elasticity, adhesion and durability. Despite the problems these substances pose to health, they are still found in most interior coatings on the market.
In 2001, Sto introduced its complete range of VOC free interior coatings. Sto's VOC free products are regularly checked by the Technical Control Board (TÜV) for emission levels. Sto was the first company in Germany to have been awarded the TÜV's octagonal blue testing seal. This places much more stringent requirements than the "Blue Angel" seal of quality, which permits residual quantities of solvents.

Timeline
1990 Continued reduction of waste water quantities through the use of special filtration and cleaning equipment.
1993 Reduction in the use of solvent based products. Founding of the department for quality and environmental management.
1994 Increased use of re-usable packaging
1995 Introduction of silo technology, less packaging.
1997 Installation of a powder drier for the re-use of secondary raw materials in the production process. First environmental tests at the main production facility in Stühlingen.
1999 Sto AG in Stühlingen is awarded the environmental certification of DIN EN ISO14001.
