The Lotus-Effect® phenomenon was discovered by German botanist Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Barthlott. He found that it wasn't a smooth surface that gave the lotus leaf its hydrophobic properties, but an extremely stippled microstructure.

Self-cleaning exterior paint from Sto
If you have found this page, it is likely that you have a problem with soiled walls. Dirty facades look awful, and if treated incorrectly, can be a recurring, expensive and time consuming maintenance issue. Self-cleaning paints can alleviate the associated costs and inconvenience of dealing with dirt on surfaces.
good looks
Surfaces remain clean and dry for longer
Prolonged refurbishment cycles
Minimised costs
Less interference with residents
Maximises the value of your property long term
On typical surfaces, water and dirt accumulates over time. This leads to unsightly exterior surfaces, devaluing the property. The surface becomes a breeding ground for micro-organisms that thrive in damp and dirty conditions, such as algae, fungus and bacteria.
The build-up of surface grime is especially noticeable in areas exposed to harsh weather conditions.
StoLotusan Color sheds water from a surface as it rains. This process removes dirt and grime from exterior walls. Water cannot maintain surface contact and the wall dries quickly. Without water, micro-organisms such as algae, fungus and bacteria cannot survive.
Fact: No other exterior paint incorporates the water-repelling properties of the Lotus-Effect®.
Self-cleaning paints are not a miracle cure, at least not yet! Surfaces will always need recoating eventually. However, by using StoLotusan Color instead of traditional paints you can:
Minimise costs e.g. scaffolding
Cause less inconvenience to building users
StoLotusan Color is a breathable surface coating. With it, surfaces can 'breath' allowing a building to function as designed, unlike claims from alleged 'never paint again' products.
Available in a selection of 500 colours from the StoColor System.
Super-hydrophobic is a technical term used to describe a surface structure that minimises the contact angle between the surface and a water droplet. Surfaces with a contact angle of 140º or more are said to be super-hydrophobic. StoLotusan Color, incorporating the Lotus-Effect® offers a starting contact angle of 140º, which actually improves over time. |
