European Investment Bank

The old Cornhill office building housing the London Headquarters of the European Investment Bank required an interior renovation to better meet the needs of staff and visitors. Brady Mallalieu architects were chosen to design this interior fit-out. To minimise any disruption to effective working, the brief called for the work to be completed within the EIB's summer holidays.

As part of the renovation, the client needed acoustic ceilings to be retrofitted to the existing steel-pan ceiling with an emphasis on installation speed and cost.

In 2009, Sto introduced the StoSilent Modular acoustic ceiling canopies, designed specifically for retrofitting into existing buildings.

StoSilent Modular 200 and StoSilent Modular 400 were specified. StoSilent Modular 200 consists of 2 panels, each measuring 2400 x 1200 x 15mm, with a light in the middle. StoSilent Modular 400 consists of 4 panels, each measuring 1200 x 1200 x 15mm with 4 lighting elements in the form of a cross.

Ceilings needed to be fitted to one office, a meeting room and a board room, where a cut-out was made to the ceiling panel to neatly conceal a projector when not in use.

Neil Brownlie, Product Manager for Acoustics at Sto, says: "StoSilent Modular systems lend themselves to this type of retrofit project in order to keep disruption within the client building to a minimum. StoSilent Modular panels consist of acoustic boards (96% recycled glass granulate) that are finely sprayed with StoSilent Superfine plaster. They achieve an acoustic performance of 0.80NRC – 0.85αW (500–1250Hz)."

Reverberation times were cut from as much as 1.00 second RT down to 0.42 seconds RT to provide improved speech intelligibility.

Completed in Summer 2009, the European Investment Bank interior fit-out was completed in time for employees returning from their summer break.
