Douglas Close, Roundshaw

The Roundshaw estate, Croydon, has undergone a major transformation using StoTherm Classic supplemented with Sto Brick Slips at ground floor level. The external regeneration programme cost £260,000 and was completed in August 2009.

Mike Threadgold of Renocon Ltd, facade system applicators, stated: "The building's facade had previously consisted of a brick finish which had become tired and weathered over the years. The client's brief called for an insulated cladding system incorporating terracotta tiles and brick slips at the ground floor levels.

"We suggested that due to the interfacing difficulties normally experienced incorporating the terracotta framework and system into an EWI system that it would be more advantageous to design out the interfacing details by means of substituting the terracotta tiles for an aesthetically pleasing alternative which would provide the client with a system wholly from one manufacturer.

"It was suggested that a replacement panel for the terracotta tiles could be manufactured in place of the clay terracotta and this was proposed to Sto who agreed to design and produce a special sample for approval by the client.

"The client was so impressed with the sample that they agreed to replace all of the terracotta tiles with the Sto alternative panel."

Manufactured from synthetic render, Sto Brick Slips offer durable, weather resistant properties as a low maintenance facade solution. The simulated terracotta appearance is compatible with all Sto external wall insulation, rainscreen cladding and render systems, providing levelling, reinforcement and insulation with a classic terracotta appearance.

Colin Gager, Contacts Manager at Mulalley Ltd added, "Using the Sto terracotta slips instead of terracotta tiles saved an average of £25 per square metre. The terracotta slips worked well because they were lighter and easier to fix to the rendered facade. Overall they did the job and were very impressive."

The building's facade also incorporated the StoTherm Classic external wall insulation system, well suited to new build and refurbishment projects. The system is a durable, functional and versatile choice for meeting building insulation requirements. Its characteristic aesthetic produces a seamless external wall surface, whilst the cement-free, through coloured render finish complements the building's design and provides a weather-beating, highly flexible and crack-resistant decorative facade.

Sto Brick Slips are available in six standard colours, however, not limited to standard brick appearance, any of the 800 colours in the StoColor System can be achieved in order to match or create a unique appearance. Sto adhesive and Pointing Mortar are also available in six colours.
